What's the difference between white–box and black–box techniques?

White–box and black–box techniques are both commonly used. White–box testing technique leverages internal code structures and implementation details to guide test design whereas black–box testing relies solely on specifications and interfaces. In white–box testing, the testing team has visibility into the system internals. They use code details like branching structures, data flows, and internal conditions to increase coverage and defect detection. Examples of white–box techniques include control flow testing, data flow testing, and mutation testing.

In contrast, black–box testing treats the system as a “black box” and tests only against functional requirements or design specifications without any visibility or direct testing of internal logic. For example, if a car were to be black–box tested, the input might be the position of the accelerator pedal and the output might be the speed of the car at various times. The black box would ignore the details of the engine, fuel system, steering and many other elements of the car’s design. In contrast, white–box testing might consider all of these details and more. Testers derive black–box tests from external descriptions like UML diagrams, interface definitions, and high level workflows. Equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, decision tables, and use cases are common black–box techniques.

White–box testing can achieve more thorough coverage and is efficient at finding coding defects, but it requires access to source code and the technical expertise to understand that code. This can be challenging. For example, if a product implements a library from a third party, such as support for Bluetooth or for reading a proprietary file type, the development team may not have access to the source code for that component. Even if they do have access, they may not have the in–house expertise to test it effectively. Black–box testing does not rely on implementation details, or access to source code, so can be applied more broadly. The two complementary approaches are often combined in a comprehensive testing plan.
