Technology Building Worlds at the Computer Society India SymposiumThe CSIS (Computer Society India Symposium) is an annual event organized by the IEEE Computer Society to promote collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing within India’s computer science and IT community. It serves as an important platform for students, professionals, researchers, and enthusiasts to engage in discussions, technical sessions, and workshops.

This year, from July 29-31, 2024, at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, in Kattankulathur, India, CSIS24, “Technology Building Worlds,” offered tech talks, panel discussions, a project expo, workshops, and cultural activities. The event provided a platform for participants to learn about the latest technological trends, engage in insightful discussions, showcase innovative projects, develop practical skills, and celebrate diversity. Utkarsh Siddharth, co-founder and CTO of Equartis Technologies Private Limited, a software development and marketing firm, served as the lead for CSIS24, coordinating with the community, securing speakers, and overseeing promotions.

 

An insider’s view


IEEE CSIS24 offered a rich variety of activities and sessions aimed at engaging, educating, and entertaining attendees, who predominantly were made up of postgraduate students with backgrounds in computer science engineering and engineering. The event featured both technical and non-technical talks, with experts sharing insights on the latest advancements in computer science and information systems, as well as topics including career development and entrepreneurship. Prominent speakers included H.R. Mohan, former AVP, The Hindu; Sandeep Varma, partner, ZS; Amlan Chakrabarti, director of A.K. Choudhury School of Information Technology at the University of Calcutta; Shivam, lead, ZS; Saptarshi Ghosh, System on Chip Design Engineer, Intel; and Nikky Jha, CEO, SaptKrishi Scientific Pvt Ltd, who covered a range of topics from AI and its applications to entrepreneurship and startup acceleration.

Interactive workshops focused on personal growth and decision-making skills, while the coding competition and ideathon encouraged participants to showcase their skills and innovate. The event also included various interactive and networking sessions, a valedictory ceremony celebrating attendees’ achievements, and a cultural evening showcasing diverse performances, providing a balanced mix of learning and entertainment.

“The event had a profound personal impact on me; it was incredibly fulfilling to see all thestudents deeply engaged and purposeful in their learning, eager to explore the latestadvancements in the world of science,” said Siddharth.

 

Measuring success and outcomes


With more than 350 participants, the event saw a significant increase in attendance compared to previous years, reflecting its growing popularity. Attendees represented sections from across India, achieving the goal of nationwide participation and inclusivity. Students enthusiastically participated in sessions and discussions, Siddharth said.

“Witnessing the successful event was a deeply satisfying moment. I will carry forward the joyous memory of this experience, along with the commitment to continue creating opportunities that foster learning, engagement, and innovation for students and everyone around me in the future,” he added.

Attendee feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with students and presenters alike praising the event for being informative and engaging. Testimonials highlighted the value of the sessions and the overall organization. Many expressed a desire for longer events and more hands-on sessions in the future, pointing to the success of the current format and providing valuable insights for future improvements.

 

Future plans


Siddharth said he and the organizers plan to continue with the CSIS series and establish it as a legacy event. Future events will aim to increase the duration, introduce more interactive sessions, and invite top experts from around the world to further enhance the quality and diversity of the content offered.

The event’s success has had a significant impact on the community and organization involved, reinforcing IEEE CS’ commitment to technological innovation and excellence. It has also strengthened the organization’s reputation as a leader in technological advancement and education, attracting more industry professionals and research scholars.
